Ossining is a diverse community on the Hudson River 30 miles north of New York City. Green Ossining is a committee of citizens that is looking to protect our environment, including the Hudson River, and to reduce emissions. Anne M. Dorner Middle School is the only middle school in the community and the environmental club planning to paint a parachute that will then be brought to our town's Earth Day Festival.
Sustainable Actions in this Community
Ossining has a robust environmental community with Green Ossining being the major group involved. Some of the initiatives have included becoming a Climate Smart Community as well as partnering with other county communities to form a consortium (Sustainable Westchester) to help consumers and municipalities reduce emissions. Ossining has made emissions free electric power available to residents through a community choice aggregate. We have changed all village lighting to LED. We have developed a solar farm. We have a food scraps recycling program as well as a program for textile recycling. We are looking at electrifying our fleet of municipal vehicles and we are also looking into an electric bicycle plan.
