Story

Plogging is a combination of jogging and picking up litters in order to facilitate both physical fitness and environmental sustainability. Plogging Nigeria was launched on June 2nd, 2018 as part of the event to mark the 2018 World Environment Day, themed #BeatPlasticPollution at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Instituted as a Club in the University, it has attracted strong interests and similar establishments across campuses all over Nigeria. At the moment, we're currently established in 18 tertiary institutions across Nigeria and 2 community-based clubs. That's 20 Plogging Clubs across the country. And we have quite a couple of new clubs on the pipeline awaiting launch. Our vision is to birth "fit people in clean communities" driven by our mission of "promoting a culture of responsible waste handling and physical fitness". Ploggas (our members) go out regularly fortnightly around their campuses/communities to keep the environment clean, sensitise people on the need for responsible waste handling and detriments of improper waste management. Our picking activities is not in itself the end goal, it's only a means to the end as we're not just organizing fortnight cleanups and ending it there. Rather, we're building a culture of responsible waste management and environmental consciousness among members of the society. Our Ploggas cut across students and staff from various departments, faculties and academic background. One thing unites us all; interest/passion for the environment, need for nature and biodiversity conservation, need for responsible waste management as well as working towards achieving the SDGs.
