Dear Mother Earth Project, We would be honored to participate in in The Parachutes For The Planet project to in order to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues at a grassroots level. At The Village School, we embrace direct contact with nature. Children derive a strong sense of self and place from climbing trees, playing in mud and spending plenty of time in nature. Getting back to nature? We never left. The Village School is a non-profit independent K-6th elementary school serving children in north central Massachusetts, offering a unique curriculum based on challenging hands-on academics, direct contact with the natural world, and kindness. The Village School uses the natural world as the setting for much of its learning. Children go on walks, study forestry, dig and plant in the garden, make life drawings, keep plant life journals, and so on. Science is the study of nature, including the slow unearthing of the workings of the laws of the universe in everyday life. Environmental awareness. The school has a compost bucket in every classroom. We do recycling, gardening, car pools, and have direct connections with local farms and CSAs. Our education program takes advantage of our lovely 55 acre location. We aim that children will leave the Village School with respect for nature, so that they can take their places confidently as stewards of this planet when they reach adulthood.
