Story

I am currently a first grade dual language teacher in Gowanus Brooklyn, NY. My class and I are participating in a service learning project with a focus on the Environment. We are working with the Gowanus Canal Conservancy program and learned about the amazing parachutes your members have created. We would love the opportunity to make our own and share our new knowledge about caring for the environment with our community. We are a NYC department of education title 1 school and would greatly appreciate two free parachutes.

Sustainable Actions in this Community

We wanted to share our final parachute designs. One has all of the names of the people who participated in the service learning project and the other is an image of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY and says save the canal. All year we have been learning about climate change and small ways we can help. We have made slow changes and want to turn our classroom into as close to a zero waste classroom as possible! We have already done a few things: we reuse paper for free draw paper, we got canvas bags and decorated them for our book baggys instead of plastic bags, we are using stasher bags and mesh bags to store our learning center games, and more!. We also are participating in the Service in Schools, Kids Action Team project and working with the Gowanus Canal Conservancy to bring awareness to the canal and the importance of mussels to filter the water.
