Sustainable Actions in this Community
Our organization, The Carrie Dickerson Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) educational foundation formed to continue the work of Oklahoma's grassroots hero, Carrie Dickerson. www.carriedickersonfoundation.org Our power company (Public Service of Oklahoma) proposed a nuclear plant in NE Oklahoma in the late 1970s and it was very near to Carrie's farm. When she found out about the realities of the danger and uncertainty of nuclear plants and the lack of waste solutions, she decided to oppose the plant. Through 9 years of legal intervention, as well as peaceful activist assistance, and benefit concerts to finance the intervention, her organization, Citizen's Action For Safe Energy, succeeded in stopping the only plant in the US on which construction had already begun. As soon as the power company cancelled the plant, Carrie started promoting wind power in OK. She also wrote a history of wind power over 14 centuries which we are in the process of reprinting. It is for kids and for everyone. We have amazing capabilities for wind and sun here in our state. We are working to educate and promote renewable energy resources, environmental justice, conservation, reconnection with nature and wilderness, and to make sure Carrie's story is not forgotten through a project to produce a documentary about her life and work. We work with our partners in the Oklahoma Earth Coalition in presenting an Earth Day Festival each year. I love the idea of the parachutes and we will definitely send you photos and maybe videos of our young people decorating them! Thank you very much. If I find that I need more, I will order some right away. In solidarity for Mother Earth, Marilyn? Blessings, Marilyn McCulloch Acting Executive Director The Carrie Dickerson Foundation
